If you know me, you’ll know I have a fun little list of tricky questions I get when helping folks with new orders or upgrades. One question that comes up a lot is, "How long will my battery last?"

I think it's a fantastic question! The only hiccup is that the answer isn't super clear-cut. For a long time, I would say it really depends on how you use it, which can feel a bit vague. But I’m excited to share that I've been diving deeper into the world of lithium batteries and solar technology! I’ve teamed up with our awesome friends at Expion360 to help provide better answers to this important question. With every unit now equipped with a standard 200-Watt hard-mounted roof solar panel and a single 100AH lithium battery, we’re making sure our customers have a leg up on success in off-grid adventures!

To give you a better idea of what affects battery life, here are some key things to consider:

It’s About More Than Just The Battery

When planning your adventure, it's essential to consider more than just the battery size and capacity. While the battery is a critical component, a comprehensive understanding of the entire power management system is necessary for optimal performance.

In BundutecUSA models, we include a standard set of components designed to enhance your camping experience:

1. 200-Watt Single Hard Mounted Solar Panel: This solar panel plays a vital role in replenishing energy in the battery throughout the day. It does not directly power any features of the camper. We utilize a GoPower panel mounted on four raised feet to ensure proper airflow and heat dissipation.

2. 100AH Lithium Battery: This battery is essential for storing usable power, supplying energy for all components within the camper.

3. DC-DC Charger: For lithium batteries, this charger is crucial, particularly for many truck models, as it facilitates the correct transfer of amperage from the vehicle to the camper while driving. We have upgraded our system to incorporate the RedArc BC/DC Trailer – S, which functions as a 12V vehicle-to-trailer charger, solar controller, and smart battery isolator. This built-in isolator prevents accidental discharge of the main vehicle's battery and efficiently manages current draw.

4. 45Amp Converter with Shore Power Charging: We select Progressive Dynamics as our preferred brand for this converter. It's important to differentiate that a converter is not the same as an inverter. This device is designed to charge your camper's battery when connected to shore power and serves as the 12V distribution center for everyday power needs.

Each unit is meticulously designed with efficiency in mind, minimizing unnecessary power consumption. Our aim is to ensure that all components work harmoniously, resulting in a well-balanced system capable of sustaining extended adventures.


Understanding the Daily Power Draw

Power consumption in your camper is influenced by the appliances installed; each has its own energy requirements. In a BundutecUSA Truck Camper, the main power draws, ranked from greatest to least average draw, are as follows:

1. Nova Kool Fridge – Typically the R3000 model or a 2.5 Cu. Ft capacity, the refrigerator is the largest consumer of power.

2. Truma Combi Eco – The energy usage increases significantly when the blower fan is operating.

3. MaxxAir Fan Deluxe and LED Lighting – These accessories contribute to your total power consumption.

4. LP/CO Detector – While it has a smaller draw, it is essential for safety.

Additionally, while not standard, many campers also include Starlink for internet access. When active, it fits into the power consumption hierarchy just below the refrigerator. Understanding where your power is allocated can help you make more informed choices while camping.


How Much Power Do You Use?

To effectively assess your power usage, it's essential to understand and know your camping style. This can be categorized into three distinct user types:

Energy Saver: This user typically spends most of their time outdoors, utilizing their camper primarily for sleeping and meal preparation. They employ only necessary lighting and keep the refrigerator at a moderate setting. On average, Energy Savers consume about 38 amp-hours (Ah) of power daily. This level of consumption can be efficiently supported by a 100Ah lithium battery, allowing for multiple days without solar charging, or even an indefinite duration with partial to full sun exposure.

General User: Generally, this type spends more time at the campsite and actively uses amenities such as the refrigerator, interior lights, a MaxxAir fan, and various charging ports for devices. They may also occasionally use Starlink for internet access. General Users typically consume around 69Ah per day. Without solar support, this user could sustain power for roughly 1.5 days. However, with a standard 200-Watt solar panel, they can extend their battery life effectively indefinitely in good sun, without needing additional charging sources like shore or vehicle power. Most campers fit into this category, and with sufficient sunlight, the solar allocation will closely match daily usage, ensuring consistent battery power.

Heavyweight User: This category consists of individuals who work remotely or spend extended periods inside their camper. They rely heavily on Starlink, utilize fans at high speeds, keep all interior lights on (even when unnecessary), and run the refrigerator at near-freezing temperatures. Heavyweight Users typically consume around 107Ah per day. This high-power demand can quickly deplete battery reserves, especially in inclement weather. For these users, it is advisable to enhance their setup by adding a second battery and a second solar panel to meet their energy needs more effectively.

By understanding these categories, campers can better plan their power consumption and equipment needs for a more enjoyable outdoor experience.

Small Adjustments Make a Difference

Sunshine Over Shade: To really get the best output from your solar panels, try to park where they'll catch the most sunlight. I know a lot of folks prefer the cool shade, but if you can handle a bit of heat or have an awning, parking in the sun during peak hours can really help recharge your batteries as you enjoy your time outdoors.

Switch Off What You Don’t Need: My mom always had this rule about turning off lights when they weren't in use, and it still sticks with me today! This simple habit pays off big-time while camping, letting you focus on enjoying natural light and fresh air instead of wasting energy on unnecessary devices.

Adjust Your Fridge Settings: If you have a Nova Kool fridge, it uses a classic rotary-style dial with numbers from 1 to 7—1 being the warmest and 7 the coldest. When the sun is shining bright, you can crank it up to a higher number. Yes, it may run a bit more, but it’ll keep your food nice and cold while your solar panels are in action. When evening rolls around and temperatures drop, you can easily dial it back to a lower number, saving energy since it won’t need to work as hard to stay cool. We do this with our own fridge, and it really helps us maximize our power while we’re camping!


How Can I Increase Recovery

When assessing your power consumption needs, particularly if you identify as a "heavyweight" energy consumer or simply wish to ensure you have ample power, increasing your solar capacity can be an effective solution. One of the simplest methods to achieve this is by adding an additional solar panel. By incorporating a second panel of the same wattage, energy savers and general users can double their time out. However, if you are a heavyweight user, you won't double your time out but can easily increase your capacity to an extra day.

In addition to increasing solar panel capacity, installing a second battery can further enhance your energy storage capabilities. However, it's important to understand that the impact of a second battery on extending your time outdoors can be more complex due to variations in energy usage.

For those looking to maximize their off-grid camping experience, the best approach is to add both a second solar panel and a second battery. If your camping adventures take you to shaded areas, you can still improve solar energy recovery by using a portable external solar panel.

When selecting a portable solar panel, the options are vast, just like with solar panels and batteries; however, it is important to make sure you are using a panel with its own solar controller between the panel and the connection to the camper batteries. These portable solar connections will run directly to the battery and NOT through the camper’s BCDC component. Without this in-line solar controller, you will have unregulated charging, which will shorten the life of the battery.


Why Go Lithium?

BundutecUSA has taken a measured approach in transitioning lithium batteries in the RV market, opting for careful integration rather than an immediate switch from traditional AGM batteries. This deliberate choice was primarily driven by the desire to ensure an optimal user experience with lithium technology. The introduction of the BC/DC system in our models has effectively addressed the challenges associated with charging from both the truck and the camper.

With lithium batteries now standard in our latest demo units, we fully embrace their advantages, which include:

- Weight: Lithium batteries are significantly lighter compared to standard AGM batteries.

- Flexible Installation: They can be mounted on any side without concerns about orientation.

- True Capacity: Users can access the full amp-hour (AH) capacity of the battery during discharge.


Cold Weather “Limitations”

When considering the performance of lithium batteries in cold weather, particularly at temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, it's essential to understand their limitations. While these batteries can continue to discharge in cold conditions, they are unable to accept a charge from solar panels, the vehicle's alternator, or shore power once temperatures drop below this threshold without some type of heat source.

An exception to this is the Expion360 Battery Brand, which features a self-heating VHC (Vehicle Heat Conduction) system. This innovative system ensures that the battery maintains an optimal temperature independently of external heating sources like the Truma Combi Eco.

Lithium batteries equipped with a VHC or "internal heating" capability prioritize warming their cells using the energy from the charging source itself, rather than depleting their stored power. This allows them to be charged in colder conditions, which is not the case for lithium batteries lacking such a system. Although these batteries can be stored in cold environments without damage, they may temporarily shut down charging until optimal temperatures are reached, making them easier to manage in off-season storage. Additionally, if positioned outdoors, solar panels will help to provide enough energy to maintain the battery's optimal operating temperature in preparation for upcoming trips.

For those living in colder climates, it's reassuring to know that a lithium battery, particularly the Expion360, can handle occasional deep discharges without significantly affecting its lifespan. Conversely, traditional AGM batteries may suffer from reduced life cycles after just one deep discharge event. This makes lithium batteries a more reliable choice for outdoor enthusiasts operating in varying temperature conditions.


My Final Thoughts

I can be a little high-strung sometimes, and I really pour my heart and soul into everything I do. So, when I finally take a moment to slow down and recharge in nature, the last thing I want to worry about is whether my power will last for the trip. For me, the best off-grid adventures are all about enjoying the journey, not fretting over battery levels!
